A guy on night shift bet me $20 I couldn't hold 0.0005 on a bearing bore without a probe, and I lost
We were running a batch of 4140 bearing housings on the Haas lathe last month and the tolerance was tight enough that the probe was doing all the work. He kept saying my manual offsets would drift once the spindle warmed up, but I figured 15 parts in I had it dialed. Part 22 came off at 0.0008 over and the QC guy flagged it, so the whole batch went back for rework on a Saturday. Wound up scrapping two of them at 400 bucks of material each plus the machine time. Anyone else get burned trusting their touch-offs on long runs, or do you just eat the probe cycle time?
