Old machinist told me to slow down my rapids and it cut my cycle time by 8%

He watched me run a part last Tuesday and said "you're jerking the machine around like a pissed off teenager." Told me to drop my rapids from 500 to 300 IPM and dial back the acceleration. Counterintuitive right? But he was right. Less vibration meant I could take heavier cuts and the finish improved. Has anyone else had their rapids tuned down and seen better cycle times?

Yeah I read somewhere that slowing down the rapids can actually let you take heavier cuts because the machine stays more stable. It makes sense when you think about it, less jerking around means better chip flow and less tool deflection. Your old machinist probably saved you a bunch of tooling costs too without you even realizing it yet.

Old machinist told me" - he was right. Vibration kills cycle time and tool life.

Man, I used to be one of those people who thought pushing the feed and speed was the way to get stuff done faster. Totally had that backwards. @abbyg60, your old machinist knew what he was talking about for sure. Once I actually started paying attention to vibration and dialing things back, my cycle times actually dropped and my tools stopped chipping every five minutes. It's one of those lessons you gotta learn the hard way, I guess.
