Pro tip: check your spindle load readings during warmup

I read a post last week from a guy in Ohio who caught a bad bearing before it failed just by watching the load meter climb over 15 minutes. I tried it this morning on our old Haas and sure enough, the numbers were creeping up on the 3rd shift start. Has anyone else used load readings as an early warning, or do you just run until something sounds off?

Wait till you see the numbers jump when the spindle is cold and the machine hasn't leveled out yet. I've watched ours climb 8 percent in the first ten minutes just from the oil warming up, so you gotta know your baseline before you panic. That Ohio guy got lucky, but your load meter will cry wolf way more often than it catches a real problem.
