Saw a guy at the machine shop in Akron run a tap without any oil, and the chips came out like dust
Stopped by a small job shop in Akron last Thursday to pick up some 4140 drops, and there was this older guy tapping 1/4-20 holes dry on a knee mill. He said he had been doing it that way for 20 years and never broke a tap. I have always used Tap Magic and pecked at it slow, so watching him run it fast with no lube made me nervous. He let me try two holes and honestly the chips came off fine but the tap got warm enough that I could feel it through my glove. Am I babying my taps, or was this guy just lucky that day? Curious what you all run for lube on plain steel taps.
