Surprised by how much tool wear adds up per part

I was running a job last week in Toledo, 316 stainless parts, and decided to track inserts per piece for the first time. Used a simple spreadsheet, and it turned out each part was eating about $4.20 in carbide, which I never would have guessed. That's over $2,100 for the full run of 500, and it made me rethink my feeds and speeds completely. Has anyone else actually crunched these numbers on their own jobs, and did it change how you program?

Buddy of mine runs a small shop and did the same thing on some titanium job. He about choked when he saw the numbers, ended up slowing way down and the tool life nearly tripled. Now he tracks everything, calls it his boring spreadsheet.
