That $700 digital height gage I bought saved a job last Tuesday... or did it?

Spent big on a Mitutoyo digital height gage after my old vernier started slipping, and it nailed a tight tolerance on a rush order for a medical part. But my buddy swears his $150 import does the same thing and has never failed him... anyone else feel like fancy measuring tools are worth it or just a waste?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree here. In my experience, there's a real difference when you're pushing tenths on something critical like a medical part. Your buddy's $150 import might work fine for general work, but I've seen those drift after a few months or give inconsistent readings when the battery gets low. The Mitutoyo stuff holds its calibration better and feels more solid day in and day out. Your mileage may vary, but for me, the peace of mind on those tight tolerance jobs is worth the extra cost over time.

Peace of mind" sounds like something I'd pay extra for when my caliper isn't lying about a .005" difference.
