Tried climb milling on a 4140 shaft last week and the finish came out way better than I expected
Usually I just conventional mill everything because that's how I was trained, but the tool marks on this 2 inch shaft were driving me nuts so I flipped the direction and it looked like it came off a grinder. Anyone else switch directions depending on the material or do you just pick one and stick with it?
Tool runout and spindle direction can matter more than the material itself, so climb milling on a shaft that's spinning in a lathe setup will fight you unless the part is locked solid. Depending on how yours was held, flipping the cut could have been the only reason it cleaned up.
