Vent: A kid fresh out of trade school argued with me about climb milling on a finish pass
I was training a new guy on our Haas VF-2 in Amarillo and he kept insisting we climb mill the whole roughing cycle because his instructor swore by it, even after I showed him the tool chatter on a 4140 steel block. I've run manual mills for 11 years and seen inserts blow up from that exact move, so we ran it both ways and the conventional pass gave us a way better finish on the side wall. He still thinks his textbook was right. Anybody here still going back and forth on this with the young guys coming up?
Been there man, had a kid last year tell me climb milling is the only way on our old Bridgeport clone. Ran a 1018 block with a 3/4 end mill and watched the whole thing howl like a banshee, switched to conventional on the finish and it cleaned right up. The textbook stuff doesn't teach you what a machine actually sounds like when it's fighting you. Give it a few months of busted inserts and he'll come around.
