I finally tried a lighter roast on my new Chemex and it was a total game changer

I always went for dark roasts thinking they had more flavor, but this Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from a local roaster was SO bright and fruity. It completely changed how I think about my morning cup. Anyone have other light roast beans they love?

My friend was the same way, swore by dark roasts. Then he brought over some of this Kenyan light roast from a shop downtown. The smell alone was crazy, like berries right out of the bag. He made a cup and it tasted like tart cherry and something sweet, maybe brown sugar. He won't shut up about it now, his whole coffee routine is different.

Honestly all this talk about light roasts being a game changer feels overblown. That bright and fruity taste you love just comes off as sour and weak to me. A good dark roast has a deeper, richer flavor that actually feels like coffee. Light roasts just taste like hot water with a hint of fruit tea. I tried a few from fancy roasters and they never hit the spot like a solid dark roast does. It's just a trend that makes coffee taste undercooked.

Yeah that Kenyan sounds wild... but @harper693, have you tried messing with your grind size or water temp? I found light roasts can taste sour if the water's too cool.
