My espresso machine just turned a 3 year old into a matchstick

Last week in Portland, my buddy's kid hit the steam wand button on my Gaggia and the whole group head shot boiling water across the counter, scorched a towel in 4 seconds flat. I never locked the dial after pulling shots, has anyone else had a near miss with a hot machine and little hands in the house?

Put a baby gate across the kitchen doorway for a solid year until my youngest turned five. Also started twisting the steam wand dial off completely and setting it on the counter after every single shot, even if I was just grabbing milk from the fridge. The kid never got burned, but I had one close call where he reached for the shiny portafilter right after I pulled a shot, and that was enough for me. I moved the whole machine to the back counter away from the edge too, so the buttons are now out of little arm's reach. Honestly, the gate was the real fix, it gave me time to cool down the machine before anyone wandered in. Better to look like a paranoid parent than deal with a kid in the ER.
