My French press carafe shattered right before a big meeting in my home office last week.

Was it just the glass or the whole press? I've had the glass break on mine before (the metal frame was fine) and a replacement carafe was pretty cheap online. Honestly, it saved me from buying a whole new unit.

That glass is basically the whole press.

But what if the frame is bent too? @verawhite, sometimes the glass shatters with enough force to damage the metal, and then you're out of luck. That's what makes it such a gamble to fix.
