My local roaster's price hike made me do a blind taste test last month
Back in 2022 I started buying beans from a small place in Portland, just a few blocks from my work. Their house blend was $14 a bag, which felt fair. Last month they bumped it to $19 with no warning sign, just the new sticker on the shelf. I got annoyed, so I picked up three cheaper bags from the grocery store and brewed them side by side over four mornings. Honestly, I could not tell the difference in a blind test, even with the same grinder and water temp. My buddy Dave guessed wrong on two out of three tries too. Now I am stuck because I like supporting the local shop, but $5 a bag adds up to about $260 a year if I buy weekly. Has anyone else run a taste test like this, or am I just cheap? What would you do with that kind of gap?
