Stop Rinsing Your Pour-Over Filter With Hot Water Before Brewing

I used to think pre-wetting the paper filter was MANDATORY to get rid of that paper taste. But last month I tried skipping that step with my Melitta cone and the coffee actually tasted the SAME. All I was doing was wasting hot water and making my brew take longer to heat up. Has anyone else tested this blind or am I missing something?

Honestly pre-wetting also heats up the cone so your brew temp stays more consistent.

Pre-wetting just sounds like extra steps to me.

Oh man, I was right there with you. I skipped pre-wetting for like a week straight and honestly couldn't tell a difference in taste either. But here's the thing that changed my mind - I noticed my brew temp was dropping way faster without it. Like, I'd pour and the cone would suck all the heat out and my water just sits there cooling down. I started timing my drawdowns and they were consistently longer without preheating. So now I just do a quick rinse but i don't bother waiting for the cone to get fully hot, just enough to knock out that chill. It's like 10 seconds extra and my brews finish faster so it balances out.
