Switched from a blade grinder to a burr grinder after 5 years of thinking it didn't matter
I used to buy pre-ground coffee because my old blade grinder made such a mess of the beans, chunks and dust all mixed together. About 6 months ago my buddy came over and watched me prep my morning brew with that thing and just shook his head. He brought over his entry level burr grinder the next day and told me to try it for a week. First cup I made with it had way more flavor and none of that bitter burn I was used to. Now I'm upset I wasted years drinking coffee that could have been way better. So here's the debate: does the grinder actually matter more than the beans themselves, or am I just convincing myself I taste a difference because I spent the money on the upgrade? Anyone else have a similar moment where a piece of gear changed your whole routine?

Are you really telling me a grinder changed your whole life? I mean, it's a coffee maker, not a new car. I'm glad you're happy with it, but I'd be careful convincing yourself it's night and day when it could just be a small step up from a really bad setup.

So you think it's just a small step up from a really bad setup." That's a fair point, @the_mary, but I gotta ask - have you actually tried switching from a blade grinder to a burr one yourself? Because it's not just about the machine, it's about the grind size being consistent. Bad pre-ground or a blade grinder makes coffee that's all over the place, bitter and sour at the same time. Once you get even grinding, the flavor actually matches what the beans are supposed to taste like. It's not about a new car, it's about not wasting good beans on crap results.

Knock that grinder against the counter once. Burr alignment shifts, back to square one.
