TIL my cheap scale was off by 3 grams this whole time
I've been using this $12 kitchen scale for like 4 years now. Decided to test it with a calibration weight from a friend who roasts beans. Turns out it was reading 18 grams when I put 15 grams on it. No wonder my pour overs have been tasting kind of inconsistent lately. Picked up a decent Jennings scale at a restaurant supply store for $40. First cup this morning was way better. Anybody else ever find out their gear was just wrong the whole time?

Used to think a cheap scale was close enough. That 3 gram difference changed my mind real quick.

Crazy how something that small can mess up a whole routine, but it's the same with thermometers and timers too. Once you start checking your gear you realize half the stuff you trust is just sort of guessing. Probably applies to more than just coffee if you really think about it.

Heard a coffee guy on a podcast say most cheap scales drift over time because the sensors just aren't that good. Guess three grams off is enough to screw with extraction though.
