Warning about single-origin vs. blend decision I made

I had to pick between a $22 bag of single-origin Ethiopian beans and a $16 house blend at my local shop in Portland last week. I went with the single-origin because everyone online raves about the fruity notes. The problem is it came out sour no matter how I brewed it with my Chemex. I wasted three mornings trying to dial it in before giving up. Has anyone else found single-origin beans harder to work with than a balanced blend?

$22 for single origin? That's rough.

Man, @logan236 is totally right calling that $22 rough. I mean yeah sure specialty coffee has its fans but that price is pushing it even for a single origin. You can grab a solid bag of something from a local roaster for like $14-$16 and it'll taste just as good if not better. Once you hit that $20 mark I feel like you're paying for hype as much as the beans themselves. Unless it's some super rare lot from a famous farm I'd say pass and save your money.

Totally feel that, I got burned on a $20 bag last month that was just okay.
