Why does nobody talk about how finicky pour-over kettles can be?

My gooseneck kettle straight up stopped pouring evenly last Thursday. The stream would just sputter and drip everywhere no matter how slow I went. I tried descaling it twice and even took the spout apart to check for blockage, but nothing worked. Ended up using a regular measuring cup for my morning brew and it was a mess of splashes and uneven grounds. Has anyone else had a kettle just decide to quit on them like that?

My first gooseneck kettle did the exact same thing during a serious Saturday morning pour. It started pouring in two separate streams like some kind of coffee baptism gone wrong. Ended up just using a regular teakettle spout for a week and my pour overs looked like a crime scene. Sometimes these kettles just develop a bad attitude and there's no fixing it, mine is now a very expensive paperweight.

Wait, I actually read that same blog post and I think they got it backwards about the design flaw. It's not the spout shape that causes the splitting, it's usually mineral buildup inside the spout from hard water. That blog was talking about some high end kettles with welded seams being the issue, but yours sounds like it just got clogged up over time. I've fixed the same problem by running a vinegar solution through mine every few months and it keeps the flow totally smooth.

Read a blog post recently claiming kettles like that have a design flaw, @milessmith.
