Is he using tap water while you're buying fancy bottled stuff?

Hang on, I gotta push back a little on that. Most tap water in the US is actually regulated way stricter than bottled water by the EPA, so it's not automatically worse or anything. Unless they're on a private well that hasn't been tested lately, the tap is probably fine for everyday drinking.
