Did you catch that NPR segment a few months back about how third places are disappearing in America? Oh man, that's such a good point! I actually started keeping a notebook for my coffee shop visits after I realized I couldn't remember if I'd already hit 100 visits for the punch card they don't have anymore. It sounds nerdy but it really does make you appreciate the little things. One thing I'd say is to actually talk to the staff when you're there, don't just order and sit on your phone. Ask them how their day's going or comment on the music they're playing. That's what turns a regular haunt into a real third place where people know your name. I've seen it make the difference between a place that closes after a year and one that's been around forever.
