A chat with my nephew about his first comic book changed how I think about collecting

He got a beat up copy of Amazing Spider-Man #300 for his birthday and was just so happy to have it, not worried about the grade. He said, 'It's mine and I can read it whenever I want.' Made me realize I've been too focused on condition over just enjoying the stories. Do you guys ever feel that pressure to keep things perfect gets in the way?

Yeah, that pressure can really kill the fun of it.

But sometimes that pressure is what makes it fun for me. Like with a tough video game boss, the stress to beat it makes winning feel amazing. Or trying to cook a new recipe for friends, the worry about messing up makes the good result even better. A little heat can turn a hobby into something you're really proud of.

What if that pressure just makes you scared to use your stuff? I'm with @the_nathan on this one.

Actually, that pressure to keep things perfect is what pushes some collectors to the next level. It's like restoring an old car, you don't just drive it into the ground, you take crazy care to get every detail right and that struggle is the whole point. For a lot of us, the hunt for that high-grade copy and keeping it safe is the real hobby, not just reading a story you can find anywhere. @the_wren might see it as being scared, but it's more about respecting the object itself. That mint condition book is a piece of history you're preserving, and that responsibility adds a deeper layer to collecting.
