Found a trick for reading silver age comics without damaging them

I got a stack of old Flash comics from my uncle last month and they were pretty brittle. The staples were rusted and the pages felt like they would tear if I breathed on them. I tried using cotton gloves but they made it hard to turn pages and I still felt like I was hurting the books. Then my buddy at the comic shop told me to use those flat plastic page holders like the ones for coin collecting. I picked up a pack of 50 for 8 bucks at a hobby store. Now I slide one under each page and I can read the whole book without ever touching the paper. The pages stay flat and I can see the full art without pressing down. Has anyone else tried this or do you have a better way to handle older books?

Wait until you drop one of those plastic holders and it slides under the couch. Now you got a whole scavenger hunt just to read page 3. I tried this once with an old Batman book and ended up spending more time lining up the plastic sheets than actually reading the thing. Feels like prepping for surgery just to enjoy a comic.

Oh come on, that's half the fun though. The whole ritual of setting up the protective sheets and gently placing the comic inside, it forces you to slow down and actually appreciate what you're reading. Plus, if you drop the holder under the couch, you're just getting some exercise (and maybe cleaning under there for the first time in months, which is a bonus). The surgical prep analogy feels extreme to me, I'd compare it more to setting up a nice reading nook with good lighting and a cup of tea. It's not about efficiency, it's about creating an experience around the comic that makes you feel like you're handling something special.
