Pro tip: Stop buying graded comics for reading copies

I spent $150 on a CGC 9.8 copy of a 90s Spider-Man issue last year, only to realize a raw copy for $8 reads exactly the same. Save your money for keys or slabs you want to display, not for flipping through.

Had a buddy buy a slabbed comic for reading, cracked it open and felt like a fool for spending that extra cash.

Feel for your buddy big time. It's an easy trap to fall into when you see that shiny case and think it's the only way to get a copy. The grading market really pushes that feeling of needing it authenticated, but for reading, it's just a waste. Hope he didn't lose too much on the premium and at least got to enjoy the story.

My cousin did the same thing with a Batman #423 a few years back... paid like $180 for a slabbed copy just so he could have it on his shelf. Then he actually wanted to read it and realized he'd have to destroy the case to get the comic out. He ended up keeping it sealed and buying a beat up reading copy off eBay for $3. The whole thing felt so backwards to me, spending all that money on a book you can't even open. I guess some people just like the display factor more than the story itself though.
