PSA: a guy at my shop in Fort Wayne told me I only own 3 Spider-Man books because I'm 'part of the problem'
So I was killing time at my local shop in Fort Wayne before a pull list pickup and this guy sees me grab the new Ultimate Spider-Man off the wall. He asks what else I read, and I go 'mostly just Spidey stuff, maybe 12 titles a month.' He gets this look and tells me I'm part of the problem because I'm not reading indie books, and that if everyone bought like me the industry would die. Here's the thing, I have a full run of Amazing Spider-Man from 300 to 700, that's 400 issues I hunted down at cons over 6 years. I know my taste is narrow. But I walked out feeling weird about it anyway. I get his point about supporting small books, I do, but I already drop around $60 a month at that store alone. Do you guys think reading mostly one character is actually bad for comics, or was this guy just having a rough Wednesday? Genuinely want to hear from people who mix it up more than I do.
Did he bother asking WHY you read so much Spidey before lecturing you? I've been the "one character" person at my shop too, and the folks who actually run the place never cared, they just liked that I showed up every week and paid my pull list. Here's the thing, 400 issues hunted at cons over 6 years is a real collection, that's not "part of the problem," that's a customer who's invested. If you WANT to branch out, try asking your shop guy for one indie rec a month based on what you like about Spidey, street level stuff, grounded stakes, but don't let some random dude make you feel bad about $60 a month going to a local store.
