PSA: I was wrong about paying cover price for single issues, and one dollar bin detail did it
For years I swore I would never pay $4.99 for a new single issue when I could wait for the trade paperback. I was that guy at my local shop in Akron who told anyone listening that floppies were a dying format. Then a buddy handed me a copy of a stat from Comichron about 2023 direct market sales, and the piece that got me was how a handful of indie titles sold maybe 4,000 copies on the single issue run while the trade did 30,000. That flipped my thinking, because those first issues are the ones that decide if the book keeps going at all. I started buying one or two new books a month just to cast a vote, nothing crazy, maybe $10 total. The weird part is I actually read them slower now, since there is no back half sitting there waiting. I still buy trades for stuff I missed, but I was totally wrong about the single issue being pointless. Curious if any of you shifted the same way, or did digital subscriptions kill that urge for you?
