Saw a guy at the Philly comic con swap meet arguing about variant covers

I was at the Philadelphia Comic Con last Saturday, just browsing the back issue bins near the back wall. This older collector was yelling at a seller because he claimed a 1991 New Mutants #98 was a 'true first print' when it clearly had a price variant sticker. The seller just shrugged and said 'it's worth what someone will pay.' That whole interaction made me realize I don't actually know how to spot those tiny differences myself. Has anyone else ever gotten burned on a variant cover purchase?

CANNOT believe people still argue over a sticker like that from 1991.

Yeah @the_susan it's pretty wild how heated people get over a 30 year old sticker.

oh come on @the_susan people are gonna argue about anything, it's basically a hobby at this point. like i get caring about stuff but a sticker from three decades ago? i've seen grown adults literally screaming at each other over whether the holo foil was sparkly enough or the color was slightly off. it's a piece of paper with glue on it, not some deep moral issue. yeah it's a cool collectible or whatever but the way some folks act you'd think someone stole their dog.
