TIL my old way of collecting comics was a huge waste of space and money

For years I bought every new #1 issue and variant cover I could find, thinking they'd be worth something. I compared that to my buddy's approach of just reading collected editions from the library first, then only buying the full stories he loved. After my basement flooded last spring, I lost about $2,000 worth of floppies that were basically worthless. His method saves cash and clutter, and he actually enjoys the stories more. Has anyone else made a switch like this after a bad experience?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I had boxes of single issues that just became a chore to move every time. Now I only buy a physical trade paperback if I've already read the story and know I'll want to revisit it. It saves so much shelf space and honestly, reading digitally or from the library first takes all the pressure off. You actually get to enjoy the art and story without worrying about the resale value.

My local library's graphic novel section is what finally broke me. I checked out the first volume of "Saga" and read it in one sitting on my couch. Zero dollars spent, no plastic bags to deal with, and I could just enjoy the book. Now my rule is I have to read something from the library twice before I'll buy a physical copy. It has saved me from so many impulse buys on series that started strong but fell apart.

Isn't it funny how we're all learning to try before we buy with everything now? I see it with streaming movies, video games, even kitchen gadgets. We want to own less clutter but still enjoy good stuff. Your library rule is smart because it puts a real pause between wanting something and actually spending money. It turns collecting into a choice about what you truly love, not just what looks cool in the moment. That shift saves money, sure, but it also makes the things you do keep feel more special.
