Why does everyone at the convention act like they've read the actual comics?

I was at a panel in Atlanta last weekend about a specific story arc, and this guy next to me kept loudly explaining the plot to his friend. He got three major character motivations completely wrong, citing stuff that only happened in the movie. It matters because it drowns out real discussion and spreads bad info. I know because I've had the original issues in a longbox since they came out. How do you even politely correct someone like that?

Ugh, that's the worst. I just lean over and say "hey, actually in issue #42 it went down like this..." in a chill way. Usually they get the hint. @davis.ruby is right, it's everywhere now.

Honestly, I see this everywhere now, not just with comics. People act like experts after watching a YouTube summary or reading a wiki page. Tbh, it's the same with movies, where someone will argue about a book adaptation but clearly never opened the book. It just makes real conversations impossible.
