Can we talk about the old diver in Morgan City who made me re-tie my own knot blind, with my tank off?
I was maybe 22, working a dock job in Morgan City, and this guy named Earl watched me fumble a bowline on the surface for like the fifth time that week. He pulled my tank off, put my hands behind a plywood board so I couldn't see what I was doing, and says do it again, you won't always have your eyes on the job. Took me 40 minutes and a lot of cursing while he just sat there eating a ham sandwich, but I can tie one in the dark now. It was the closest I ever came to feeling like that job might actually stick. Any of you older guys still make the greenhorns do blind knots, or is that just an old Gulf thing?
