Can we talk about the weird silence on the comms after 50 feet?

I was working a harbor job in Seattle last month and noticed that once I got past 50 feet, the topside guys just go quiet. I mean they still check in but it feels like they zone out. Anyone else get that feeling or is it just my crew?

Buddy had a guy fall asleep on him at 60 feet. Weirdest hour of his life.

Actually night diving can mess with your perception of time pretty badly. 60 feet with no visual reference except your buddy. Your brain just kind of shuts off sometimes.

Zoned out" is the perfect way to put it. I had a crew once where the tender went totally silent around 70 feet on a night job. No radio chatter, just breathing. It's like the pressure and the dark make their brains shut off. I had to call up and ask if he was still awake. That weird quiet can make you feel real isolated down there.
