Pro tip: I switched from a standard Kirby Morgan hat to a lightweight fiberglass one for a month of harbor work.
My neck and shoulder pain dropped by about 70% after the first week, which was a huge change from the constant ache I used to have. I think a lot of divers stick with the heavy gear because it's 'tough' but the new materials are just as strong. Has anyone else made a switch that made a big difference in comfort on long jobs?

Actually the fiberglass hat IS the standard Kirby Morgan now, the 17-4. The old heavy one was the 17-6. The weight difference is no joke though, totally believe your pain went away. That old hat felt like wearing a cinder block after a few hours.

Wonder if the lighter weight changes how it handles in a current? Like does it get pushed around more?

Yeah, the lighter hat does get pushed around more in a strong current... you really have to work your neck and body to hold position. Found I had to add a little more weight to my belt to help stay down and stable. Makes a big difference on those drift dives.
