Serious question, did a near miss on a barge in Pascagoula actually change how anyone else runs their pre-dive checks?
About 10 weeks back I was working a barge job off Pascagoula and we were getting ready for a shallow inspection dive in maybe 25 feet of muddy water. I rushed my gear check because the deck was behind schedule and the supervisor was on us about the clock, so I skipped walking my umbilical all the way back to the rack. Right as I hit the water my tender caught a kink in the line about 40 feet from the manifold that I would have found in about 15 seconds if I had done the full run like usual. Nothing bad happened, I just surfaced, we fixed it, and the dive went fine, but it chewed at me for the rest of the hitch because a kink at depth means no gas and I would have been down there sucking on nothing. Now I walk the entire hose by hand before every single splash no matter how late we are, even if it makes me the slow guy on deck. The schedule always pushes back when you slow down, funny how that works. What is the one step you refuse to skip now, and did it take a scare to make it stick?
Did the tender actually get yelled at though? From what I saw it was the other guy who got the worst of it, not the tender. The tender just kind of stood there while everyone else took the heat.
