Supervisor ripped me for my air consumption last month
Guy told me I was breathing like a panic attack underwater. Switched to longer slower breaths instead of quick ones and my bottom time went from 35 mins to almost 50 on a 19cf tank. Anyone else get told to fix their breathing pattern?

Well shoot, that's a good point about the breathing pattern. But here's something nobody's bringing up. Maybe your gear is the real problem. If your regulator isn't tuned right or has a high breathing resistance, you'll feel like you can't get enough air and suck through it faster. I had an old reg once that made me work twice as hard to breathe. Swapped it out and my air consumption dropped like a rock. Also check your tank valve. Sometimes a partially closed valve makes you think you're getting a full tank but the airflow is choked. People focus on the breathing technique but forget the hardware matters just as much.

Another angle is your finning technique. If you're kicking too hard or using inefficient fin strokes, you burn through air faster even with perfect breathing. Check your kick style and see if a flutter or frog kick saves you more gas.

Man that gear tip is solid, hardware can totally mess with your breathing without you realizing it!
