Man, that's a terrifying habit. I watched a guy on a job last year have his line get snagged on a jagged piece of hull because the sheath was worn through. It didn't rupture, but the panic and the time lost dealing with it was a total mess. It's one of those checks that takes two minutes and saves your whole day, or worse. Cutting corners on gear that keeps you alive down there is just plain stupid.
