Almost missed my train because I was too stubborn about seat preferences

I used to always walk to the very end of the platform to find an empty car, thinking it saved time. Last Tuesday at Union Station, I did that and the doors closed right as I reached the last door. The conductor said 'you had plenty of time at the front' over the speaker. Now I just hop on wherever I am, even if it means standing for 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a close call that made them change their boarding habit?

Last Tuesday I did almost the same thing at Grand Central. I walked all the way to the back car on the 5:42 because the front cars looked full. By the time I got there the doors were beeping and I had to squeeze through. Now my rule is I just get on the first open door I see, even if it means sitting in a middle seat or standing a few stops. It's funny how one bad close call can break a habit you had for years.

Same thing happened to me but with the doors closing on my backpack. Now I just dive into any open door like I'm trying to catch the last lifeboat on a sinking ship. Looks ridiculous but at least I make the train.

Learned this the hard way at Penn Station last year, now I just grab the first door too.
