Can we talk about taking the bus vs. driving your own car?

I used to swear by driving my own car, thought it saved me time. After a flat tire forced me onto the bus for a month, I saw how much I could read or just zone out. Now, I lean toward the bus for the chill factor, even if it adds a few minutes. Sure, driving gives you control and door-to-door ease, but the stress from traffic gets old. I'm torn between wanting that peace and needing to be on my own schedule. What's your take? Is the reliability of your car worth it, or does public transit win for you?

Honestly, that chill factor disappears fast when you're waiting in the rain for a late bus. I tried relying on the bus last winter and missed two important morning meetings because of a route change they never announced. Driving my own car means my groceries don't get soaked walking from the stop, and I can run three errands in different parts of town on my lunch break. The bus might work if you live and work right on the line, but that control over my own time is just too important to give up.

Totally get where you're coming from with the rain and the random schedule changes. I fixed that by checking the transit app every single morning before I left, because they update the live locations and any route alerts there. Started leaving for the bus a whole 20 minutes earlier than I needed to, which sucked at first, but built in a cushion for those random delays. Carrying a compact umbrella and a reusable grocery bag in my backpack solved the soaked groceries thing. It took some getting used to, but planning my errands along the bus route or just after work made it possible.

My old car cost $300 a month just for parking downtown. @sageadams has the right idea, because that bus pass is only $60 and the walking keeps me from needing a gym membership. The extra time on the bus is actually when I get my reading done.
