Heard a guy on the 7:15 express bus say he never checks his tire pressure in winter

He was bragging about saving five minutes a week. My neighbor's car slid into a curb last January because of a low tire, cost him over $800. Anyone else see people skipping basic safety stuff for no real gain?

Saw a thing in the paper last winter about how tire pressure drops a ton when it gets cold. Sarah_mason, that eight hundred bucks isn't just for the rubber. It's like Gavin said, you wreck the rim and mess up the alignment too. Why risk your whole car to save five minutes? Makes you wonder what else people skip.

Over $800" seems like a lot for just a low tire, doesn't it?

That $800 figure is totally possible. My neighbor's low tire wore down the sidewall on the drive, had to be replaced. Then the impact bent the rim, another big cost. Add the alignment after hitting the curb and the bill adds up fast. It's never just the tire.
