Saw a guy on the 7 train reading a book with a flashlight because the overhead light was out.

It was a paperback and he was holding a little keychain light in his teeth, which made me wonder how many of you have a go-to backup for when your commute goes dark?

Reading with a flashlight on the train" sounds like a hassle. I'd just wait for the light or read on my phone.

Totally agree, my phone screen just fries my eyes in the dark.

Remember that study about screen light messing with your sleep? I read my phone at night once and was wide awake for hours. A dim flashlight on a book feels totally different, way less harsh on your eyes in a dark train car. It's like comparing a bright kitchen light to one of those little salt lamps. The phone just blasts your face with blue light, even on night mode.
