Switched from the express bus to the bike and my 55 minute trip became 28
Honestly I put off biking to work for two years because I swore the hills would wreck me. My bus ride was 55 minutes door to door if traffic behaved, and it almost never behaved on Route 9 into downtown Portland. I finally tried the bike one Tuesday in April and got there in 28 minutes, and that included stopping to fix my chain. The bus also cost me $5.60 a day, so I'm saving around $100 a month now. The weird part is I show up less sweaty than I did crammed against the back door of a bus with no AC. Has anyone else made this switch and does the winter rain ever make you go back?
The part about showing up less sweaty than on the bus is so real. I had the same thing happen, the bus was always packed and hot and I'd get to work feeling gross anyway. What worked for me was just committing to it for two weeks straight so it stopped feeling like a big deal. I kept a spare set of clothes at my desk the first month, that took away the nerves about rain or getting dirty. For winter I got a cheap rain jacket and some fenders, and honestly the rainy rides are not that bad once you're moving. The days I used to skip were the cold ones, not the wet ones, so gloves and a hat mattered more than I expected. My advice is do the ride a few times before you sell your bus pass, then you'll know for sure.
