Vent: the bus driver in Chicago made everyone get off at 3 stops early and I still don't get why
Last Thursday I was on the 151 heading home and around 5:45 the driver just announced over the speaker that the bus was done and we all had to get off at Belmont, which is 3 stops before where I needed to go. Nobody explained anything. He just stood up, pointed at the door, and waited. It was 18 degrees out and I had no gloves on because I left them at my desk. About 40 of us stood on that corner for 15 minutes while two buses passed us with NOT IN SERVICE signs lit up. I ended up walking the last half mile and got home 40 minutes late, which wrecked my whole plan of making dinner before my kid's bedtime. Now I leave work 20 minutes earlier and grab the 146 instead, even though it adds a transfer. Has anyone figured out what actually causes a bus to just boot everyone off like that? Is there a way to check before you board?
This exact thing happened to me on the 22 last winter except I was the guy who had already taken his gloves off to dig for his Ventra card, so I got to enjoy the walk home with numb hands like an idiot. From what I have pieced together, it is usually either a mechanical issue, a driver hitting their hours limit, or the route getting short turned to get back on schedule. You can check the CTA alerts page or the Transit app before you board but honestly half the time it just happens with no warning at all.
