Appreciation post: the $12 keyboard tester I bought after a coffee spill saved a whole classroom of laptops
Last month a kid knocked a full cup of apple juice onto a cart of 24 school Chromebooks in my classroom, and 6 of them stopped charging right away. I used to just guess which keys were dead by opening up notepad, but that misses stuck keys and shorts you cannot see. I grabbed a $12 keyboard tester off Amazon, plugged each laptop in, and within 20 minutes I had 4 marked as dead boards and 2 that just needed a new charging port. Sent the 4 back to the district, fixed the other 2 myself with a $5 part each, and the whole cart was back in service the next morning. Anybody here running a tester on student machines before they hit the repair pile, or am I late to this?
Someone on a repair sub was just talking about this exact thing, testing boards before they get tossed in the dead pile. Wild that a $12 tool saved you from replacing 24 machines, schools just guess half the time.
