Back when we fixed CRTs by smacking them, now it's all firmware
I remember in 2004 at my first shop in Akron, we'd resolder cracked joints on 19 inch monitors and call it a day. Now I spend half my time explaining to folks why their smart TV needs a network reset, not a new main board. The troubleshooting steps got longer but the fixes feel less solid somehow. Anyone else miss the days when a bad cap was the most exciting thing you'd find?

Dodge the nostalgia trip for a second. Firmware updates actually fix real bugs and security holes, not just shaky solder joints. You can push a fix to a thousand TVs from your desk instead of cracking open each one.
