Chose between swapping the board or reballing the GPU on a client's 2015 Dell, and I went the cheap route
Client brought in a Dell XPS 15 from 2015 with the classic no-post issue, and I had to pick between a full board swap at $220 or reballing the GPU for about $60 in parts and my own time. I went with the reball since the guy was on a tight budget, and it actually held up fine for 6 months until he dropped it on a tile floor in his kitchen and cracked the solder joints again. Honestly not sure if I made the right call or just got lucky with the temp curve. Any of you run into this and have a rule for when to reball versus just swap the board?
Ha, this is like when you patch a tire instead of buying a new one, it works fine till the day it doesn't. Budget repairs always feel like a win right up until physics shows up. Six months for $60 vs $220 seems like a decent gamble honestly, that drop would've killed either version.
