Dead PSU took down a server rack, but the fix changed my mind about old gear

Last Tuesday in Austin, a 12 year old power supply in our rack started buzzing and took out three drives before I could yank it. I was all set to replace everything with new units, but a veteran tech showed me how to recap the old PSU and it's been rock solid for 5 days straight. Has anyone else saved a dying machine with a $20 capacitor kit instead of dropping $300 on a replacement?
