Had to pick between a $30 thermal paste or the $8 stuff for a gaming PC fix

Went with the cheap one on a customer's rig and the temps are actually 5 degrees cooler after a week. Anyone have a go-to brand that's reliable without the crazy price tag?

Honestly, rileyb61 has a point about the hype. The real trick is how you apply it... a thin, even spread beats a thick glob of any paste, cheap or not. That application method might be why you got those better results.

Nice to see the cheap stuff working out for once. A lot of those pricey pastes are just riding on marketing hype. You definitely made the right call.
