Just hit 500 successful data recoveries, and I'm starting to question my pricing
Been running a small shop out of my garage for about 4 years now. Last week I logged recovery number 500 into my spreadsheet, which I only track because I like seeing the patterns. Most are simple stuff, corrupted drives, deleted files, that kind of thing. But maybe 60 or 70 were the nasty ones, dead boards, clicking heads, water damage.
I charge a flat $150 for software recoveries and $350 if I have to open the drive up. Looking back at the numbers, I've probably grossed close to $90k from this side gig. Here's where the debate kicks in. Half of me thinks I'm undercharging because some of those jobs took 6 to 8 hours and required buying donor parts. The other half says the volume only happened because the price brings people in, especially the college crowd around here who would otherwise just lose their thesis or their family photos forever.
Do you guys set price based on time worked or on value to the customer? I had a lawyer last month offer me $800 on the spot for a quick file rescue, no negotiation. That made me wonder if I'm leaving money on the table. But if I raise rates, do I lose the steady stream of referrals? What's your take on finding that sweet spot?
