Pro tip: A cheap USB hub fixed a weird audio issue on a Dell Optiplex 3060
Had a client's Optiplex where the front headphone jack just stopped working after a Windows update. Audio drivers were fine, settings looked right. On a hunch, I plugged a basic $15 Anker USB hub into a rear port, then connected the headphones to that. Sound came through clear. Seems the internal header connection got flaky, and the OS routed audio through the USB bus instead. Has anyone else used a USB hub as a workaround for busted onboard audio jacks?

Wait, you keep a couple of those hubs in your kit just for this? That's WILD that it's such a common problem. I guess the real fix is just giving up on the built-in jack for good.

Yeah, that trick with the USB hub... I've done the same thing on a few of those Optiplex units. It's almost always a hardware fault with the front panel audio connector on the motherboard. The solder joints get weak. Your workaround is smart because it forces Windows to use the USB audio device instead of the broken internal path. I keep a couple of those cheap hubs in my kit just for this. It's a permanent fix for the user, even if it feels a bit like a band-aid.

Read somewhere that flexing the front panel cable over time can crack those solder joints. Makes sense why it's so common on those models. Your hub trick is basically the official fix now.
