Question about USB-C docks vs good old fashioned port replicators for bench work

After fighting three flaky USB-C docks on my repair bench in Tucson last week I went back to a $30 used Dell port replicator and honestly it just works every single time, so am I crazy for thinking the whole dock market is a scam?
