Spent $45 on a used UPS and it saved my client's server last week

Found an old APC unit at a pawn shop for $45. Replaced the battery and put it in a client's home office. Lightning hit their transformer Friday and everything else fried but their machine kept running. Anyone else had good luck with second hand UPS units?

Wait, you mean the pawn shop score actually worked better than the $200 new units I see people buying on Amazon? That's wild. I guess the real luck was that the lightning didn't fry the UPS too, since those old APC units have a pretty good surge rating but the battery can still die fast.

My buddy @hunt.nora had the same luck with a pawn shop UPS that outlasted two brand new ones from Best Buy lol.

Is the battery life actually shorter on those newer models or just the build quality?
