Talked to a teacher friend and now I'm rethinking how I explain things
My friend who teaches 5th grade asked me to look at her laptop last weekend. I started going into the usual details about RAM and cache, and she just looked lost. She said, 'Can you tell me what it DOES, not what it IS?' That hit different. I realized I've been talking to regular people like they're other techs for years. I tried her way on a call yesterday, telling a guy his computer was 'like a kitchen' where the RAM was the counter space for working. He got it in 30 seconds. How do you guys break down complex stuff for non-tech folks? Any good analogies you use?

Yeah, the kitchen thing is a great way to put it.

I read an article once that said the best tech analogies come from everyday jobs. They compared a computer network to a post office sorting mail, which actually made a lot of sense. The router is like the sorting machine that reads the addresses and sends the packets, or letters, down the right chute. It sticks with you because it uses something people already understand. Your kitchen example is perfect for that same reason.

Actually, the post office one is a bit off. Routers don't really read the full address like a sorting machine, they just check the zip code to know which direction to send things. It's more like a highway interchange that looks at the exit number.
