Thermal paste myths that took me way too long to bust

For years I refused to touch anything but the stock paste that came on coolers, figured name brands were just marketing fluff. Then last month I did a repaste on an old i7 that was hitting 95C under load, used a $12 tube I had been mocking in the shop. Dropped 14 degrees on the first boot after a 20 minute burn-in, I was honestly stunned. Now I keep telling clients that the spread pattern matters more than the brand, but I still see a lot of folks layering it on thick like peanut butter. Has anyone else had a shop stubbornness moment where the cheap option outperformed the premium one? Or am I the only one who ignored thermal paste upgrades for half a decade?

Oh man, this hits so close to home! It's like the whole world of buying fancy stuff, whether it's thermal paste or even just coffee makers, we all get caught up in the brand name and forget the basics sometimes. I swear, half the time the expensive thing is just paying for the pretty box and the hype. Once you actually learn the simple trick of how to do it right, the cheap stuff works just as good or better. It's a real wake up call that a lot of "premium" products are just regular stuff with a bigger price tag for the name.
